TikTok Just Changed Online Shopping: AI Shopping Assistant & One-Click Checkout Explained

TikTok has announced a new AI Shopping Assistant and Buy Direct checkout. Here’s what the changes mean for shoppers, TikTok Shop sellers and affiliate creators — and why creators should pay attention now.

TikTok Just Changed Online Shopping: AI Shopping Assistant & One-Click Checkout Explained

TikTok is becoming much more than an app for watching short videos.

On 5 October 2026, TikTok announced a new set of AI-powered commerce tools designed to move people from discovering a product to potentially buying it with far fewer steps.

Two of the biggest announcements are Shopping Assistant and Buy Direct.

If you sell products online, create TikTok Shop affiliate videos, or are looking for a new side hustle, this is worth paying attention to.

What is TikTok Shopping Assistant?

TikTok Shopping Assistant is a conversational AI shopping tool.

Instead of discovering a product and then leaving TikTok to search Google for more information, shoppers may be able to ask questions while they are still inside the TikTok shopping experience.

For example, someone could ask:

  • Does this come in XL?
  • What size should I order?
  • Is this suitable for winter?
  • What colours are available?
  • How long does delivery take?

The AI assistant can use product information supplied by merchants to help answer those questions.

That matters because one of the biggest problems in online shopping is friction. Every extra search, website visit or checkout step gives somebody another opportunity to change their mind.

What is TikTok Buy Direct?

TikTok has also announced Buy Direct.

The idea is simple: make the journey between seeing a product and purchasing it much shorter.

For eligible experiences, shoppers can potentially purchase directly from a brand through TikTok instead of following the traditional journey of watching a video, visiting another website, searching for the product and then checking out.

Availability of individual features can differ by country, advertiser and testing programme, so UK creators should not assume every feature is available to every account immediately.

Why this matters for TikTok Shop affiliate creators

This could become a major change for affiliate content.

Previously, your main job might have been getting somebody interested enough to click on a product.

Now your video could become the beginning of a much shorter buying journey.

That means product videos need to do more than say:

"Look at this amazing product."

Creators should answer the questions people actually have before buying.

For example:

  • Show the product being used.
  • Show different sizes or colours.
  • Explain who the product is actually for.
  • Show its biggest advantage.
  • Mention an obvious disadvantage if there is one.
  • Answer common questions in the video.
  • Give viewers a reason to keep watching.

Useful content could become even more important as AI systems become involved in helping customers discover and compare products.

The opportunity for small creators

You do not necessarily need hundreds of thousands of followers to experiment with TikTok Shop affiliate marketing.

A smaller creator can concentrate on making useful videos around individual products and testing different hooks, demonstrations and formats.

Instead of trying to become famous, think like a salesperson.

One video could answer:

"Does this actually work?"

Another could answer:

"Is it worth the money?"

Another:

"Which colour looks best?"

Another:

"What size should you order?"

These are questions people ask when they are closer to buying.

TikTok is also bringing more AI into affiliate management

The shopping assistant is not the only AI development around TikTok commerce.

TikTok has also introduced an Affiliate AI Agent for eligible sellers in a number of markets including the United Kingdom.

Its early capabilities include helping merchants find creators, prepare invitations, work with sample approvals and answer affiliate-related questions.

This means AI is starting to appear on both sides of TikTok commerce:

  • Helping shoppers discover products.
  • Helping merchants work with creators.
  • Helping advertisers manage campaigns.
  • Helping businesses qualify potential customers.

Could this create new side hustles?

Potentially, yes.

But don't fall for the usual social-media nonsense claiming that a new AI feature automatically means easy money.

The opportunity is in learning the system before it becomes completely crowded.

Possible opportunities include:

  • TikTok Shop affiliate content creation.
  • UGC product videos for brands.
  • Managing TikTok content for small businesses.
  • Helping sellers improve product listings.
  • Creating product demonstration videos.
  • Helping local businesses understand TikTok commerce.

These are services people can test as side hustles rather than expecting money just because AI exists.

What I would do if I were starting now

I would keep it extremely simple.

Step 1: Choose one product category you genuinely understand.

Step 2: Find products people already appear interested in.

Step 3: Create short videos answering real buying questions.

Step 4: Test different opening hooks rather than constantly changing products.

Step 5: Track views, clicks, orders and actual profit.

Step 6: Keep the formats that work and stop wasting time on the ones that don't.

The important number isn't just views.

A video with 100,000 views and no sales can be less valuable than a video with 5,000 highly targeted viewers who actually want the product.

Is this available in the UK?

TikTok's new commerce tools are being introduced and tested across different markets and experiences, so availability can vary.

TikTok's European announcement specifically discusses its Shopping Assistant, while some of the Buy Direct announcements relate to US commerce experiences.

UK users should therefore check their own TikTok and TikTok Shop accounts rather than assuming every announced feature is already enabled.

Why creators should watch this closely

The bigger story isn't one new TikTok button.

It is the combination of short-form video, artificial intelligence, product discovery and purchasing.

Someone can discover something from a creator, ask AI questions about it and potentially move towards purchasing it without following the traditional online-shopping journey.

For creators, that means product content may become increasingly valuable when it is genuinely useful rather than simply promotional.
