What is it?

Offer local ironing, quote clear batch prices and measure profit after sorting, pressing, packing and collection time.

Start a local ironing service with one controlled trial

An ironing service is a practical local offer: a customer pays you to press suitable clean garments and return them neatly organised. Begin with a small set of everyday items you can finish consistently. This is a researched business idea, not a GrabFinds earnings test. It is not suitable for everyone: you need safe equipment, attention to care labels, a clean workspace and enough time to complete what you accept. There are UK ironing requests on Airtasker, but advertised budgets do not prove completed earnings or demand in your postcode.

Choose what you will and will not accept

Offer ironing only at first, rather than washing, stain removal or dry cleaning. Agree whether work takes place in your suitable workspace or at the customer’s home. Start with straightforward garments whose care instructions you can follow. Decline unfamiliar fabrics, missing instructions, contamination, expensive occasionwear and items outside your ability. Photograph existing marks only with permission, count items together and record any concerns before accepting them. Never promise to remove damage or stains by ironing. Stop if the fabric reacts unexpectedly.

Equipment, workspace and starting costs

You need a suitable iron, stable board, safe electrical supply, good lighting, clean storage, hangers or agreed packaging, an item-count sheet and a timer. Follow the iron manufacturer’s instructions and garment care labels. Keep children, pets and customers away from hot equipment and trailing cables. Allow the iron to cool and store it safely. If you already own suitable equipment, a £20–£50 top-up allowance for simple storage and consumables is a planning example, not a complete startup quote. Add actual equipment, insurance, permissions and transport costs before committing money. Do not buy a steam generator until paid demand and your timings justify it.

Permissions, customer property and clear terms

Check GOV.UK’s home-business guidance for permissions and insurance before taking home-based bookings. Ask an insurer about customer garments in your care, ironing damage and any collection or delivery activity; do not assume ordinary home cover or public liability covers every loss. Explain scope, total price, turnaround, handover, payment and complaint arrangements in writing. Consumer work must meet reasonable care and skill standards: see Business Companion. Check the relevant distance or off-premises contract rules before accepting bookings by message or at a customer’s home. A disclaimer cannot simply remove statutory rights.

Price the whole job, not just the time at the board

Time sorting, checking labels, setting up, ironing, cooling, packing, messaging and handovers. Add collection travel when offered. A mixed basket has no standard workload: agree item categories and quantity, and explain surcharges before work. Use a minimum order only if disclosed clearly. A pricing worksheet can use: total time × your required hourly return + job costs + an allowance for overheads and uncertainty. Compare this with local offers and customer willingness to pay. Never advertise a guaranteed hourly wage from a quoted job price.

Worked example: a £20 job is not £20 profit

Illustration only: a customer pays £20; assumed electricity, packaging and travel costs total £2. That leaves £18 before other overheads and tax. If sorting, ironing, packing, communication and handover take 90 minutes altogether, the return is £12 per working hour before those additional deductions. An extra half-hour reduces it to £9 per hour. Your figures will differ. Record actual costs and all working time, including unsuccessful enquiries, rather than copying these assumptions. Use a simple spreadsheet for ironing-specific costs; do not treat a driving fuel calculator as a complete ironing-business calculator.

Find a first customer without promising more than you can deliver

Practise on your own suitable items and record the results. Share your own before-and-after photos only when you have them. Ask permission to post one clear offer in a local group: small trial bookings, area served, accepted garments, turnaround and how to request a quote. Do not claim customers or reviews you do not have. Agree one manageable paid batch and offer a realistic handover window. After completion, ask for feedback and permission before using a testimonial. Expand only if the quality and effective hourly return hold up.

Next steps and honest progress

Your first milestone is one safely completed paid batch with a recorded item count, total time, costs and customer feedback—not a full-time income promise. Use the beginner tutorial for the first trial, the part-time tutorial for weekly capacity and the full-time tutorial for deciding whether expansion is viable. Keep business income and expense records using HMRC guidance, and check your reporting obligations at Working for yourself.
