What is it?

Build your art portfolio, train in a supervised studio and plan your route from beginner to a full-time tattoo business.

Could your artwork become a tattoo career?

Tattooing can become a creative business, but it is not quick cash. Clients trust you with permanent changes to their bodies. Start with drawing, an original portfolio and a reputable studio mentor. A cheap kit, online certificate or practice on friends is not a substitute for supervised training. This is an England-focused career guide, not practical instruction in tattooing skin.

What the work involves

Consultations, original designs, appointments, hygiene procedures, consent and age checks, client records, aftercare information and business administration. Established artists may work within a studio, rent a workstation or run premises. Each model has different costs and responsibilities.

From beginner to full-time

Build your original drawing portfolio. Seek feedback and supervised training in a reputable registered studio. Develop professional safety and client-care skills. Confirm council registration or licensing and appropriate insurance before client work. Accept suitable appointments only when your mentor considers you ready and the arrangements permit it. Track actual profit before expanding. Training can take years; there is no guaranteed income or completion deadline.

Equipment and startup costs

Begin with drawing materials and a portfolio; a tablet is optional. Professional work may require mentor-approved machines and power supplies, sterile consumables, traceable inks, protective supplies, suitable furniture and lighting, handwashing facilities, cleaning systems, sharps containers and clinical waste collection. Get quotes and check what the studio supplies before buying. Professional setup costs vary substantially.

What can you earn?

Appointment revenue is not an hourly wage. Count design, consultations, setup, cleaning and admin time. Deduct studio charges, supplies, payment fees, insurance and other costs. Illustration only: £120 revenue minus £36 studio share, £12 supplies and £3 fees leaves £69 before other costs and tax. Over three total hours, that is £23 per hour before remaining deductions. These invented figures are not typical rates or an earnings promise.

Registration, safety and age checks

In England, confirm the practitioner and premises requirements and local byelaws with the council where you work; some areas use different licensing systems. A studio registration does not automatically settle your personal requirements. Tattooing under-18s is generally unlawful even with parental permission, apart from a narrow medical exception. Follow professional infection prevention guidance, arrange suitable treatment insurance and lawful waste services. Registration does not certify artistic competence. Wales has a separate compulsory special procedures licensing scheme; check local requirements in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Your first action

Gather your best original drawings and research three reputable local studios. Ask how they recruit trainees. Invest first in your artwork and finding competent supervision. Read the related beginner-to-full-time tutorial once available. A community may support portfolio feedback and business discussion, but cannot replace supervised training.
