How to Build a Full-Time Retail Arbitrage Business in the UK
Assess reliable profit, cash flow, sourcing, fulfilment and risk before considering retail arbitrage as a full-time business.

A full-time retail arbitrage business needs repeatable profit and reliable operations, not simply more discounted stock. Treat this as a business assessment after a sustained small-scale test. A strong month or a high turnover figure is not a reason on its own to leave employment. This guide offers planning methods, not an earnings forecast or a recommendation to quit your job.
1. Prove the model across different trading periods
Use several months of complete records, including quiet periods, returns and stock that did not sell. Separate repeatable results from a one-off clearance bargain. Track total sales, contribution after direct costs, overheads, losses, cash tied up and all working hours. Do not describe inventory at its hoped-for selling price as cash or profit.
Check whether your supply is genuinely repeatable. A shop may stop stocking the item, change its discount policy or sell the remaining units to other resellers. Review how much of your profit depends on one product, one shop or one selling account. Build a contingency before increasing fixed costs.
2. Calculate the sales needed to support the business
Start with required owner income and overheads, then work backwards from your observed contribution per completed order. Contribution here means buyer payment less stock, platform fees, delivery, packaging and other variable costs. Allow separately for overheads, tax, returns and losses where they have not already been included. Do not mix profit before tax with spendable household income.
