What is it?

Help local customers organise a manageable space, make their own decisions and build routines that last.

What is a home decluttering service?

A home decluttering and organising service helps customers sort belongings and make their space easier to use. You might organise a wardrobe, create sensible kitchen storage or help someone work through a spare-room cupboard. The customer makes the decisions about what stays and what leaves. Your job is to provide structure, patient support and practical organisation. This can be a local side hustle for someone who enjoys careful, people-focused work. Being tidy yourself is useful, but it is not enough: customers may feel embarrassed, tired or attached to possessions. A good service respects their pace and priorities. It does not promise to transform every room in one visit.

What can you offer first?

Start with one defined service: a two-hour wardrobe organising session, for example. Agree which wardrobe or section you will tackle, what a useful outcome looks like and what happens to unfinished sorting. Leave time to put belongings somewhere safe before you finish. Suitable early jobs could include a kitchen cupboard reset, a small hallway storage area or one accessible shelving unit. Avoid loft clearances, heavy lifting, hazardous waste and specialist hoarding situations beyond your training. Decline tasks that require medical, therapeutic or safeguarding expertise you do not have. This is different from a cleaning service. If cleaning is not included, say so. Equally, organising clothes does not automatically include ironing, furniture assembly or selling possessions online.

Equipment and startup costs

Begin with removable labels, a marker, a notebook and a few reusable sorting bags or trays. An illustrative £20–£50 kit allowance may cover these basics, depending on what you already own. It is not a complete business launch budget. Obtain insurance quotes, allow for travel and consider relevant training before taking paid work. Use the customer's existing storage where possible. Buying baskets before sorting can waste money and create more clutter. Agree any proposed purchases and who pays before ordering them. Do not make customers buy an expensive matching storage system to achieve a useful result.

Price the whole job

Your fee must cover more than the hours inside the home. Count enquiries, planning, travel, invoicing and follow-up. Check whether parking charges apply. Agree how extra time is approved instead of allowing a short booking to become an open-ended day. For illustration, suppose a two-hour session costs £60. Travel and consumables cost £8, and travel plus administration take another hour. That leaves £52 before fixed business costs and tax, equivalent to £17.33 for each of the three working hours. It is not £30 an hour in take-home pay. A different distance or slower booking process changes the result.

Customer consent and privacy

Ask permission before opening cupboards, moving belongings or handling documents. Create clearly labelled keep, consider, donate and discard areas, but let the customer approve decisions. Never throw something away because you think it has no value. Put uncertain items aside rather than forcing a decision. Do not photograph a customer's home for marketing without separate, informed consent. Avoid showing paperwork, addresses, medication, valuables or children's details. A satisfied customer can recommend you without having their private space posted online.

Boundaries before the first booking

Put the agreed area, session length, total price, exclusions and cancellation information in writing. Services booked online or in a customer's home may carry cancellation rights; use the current Business Companion guidance when preparing your terms. Do not assume a deposit removes those rights. Keep waste removal outside your initial offer. Transporting waste as a business can require registration and other compliance; requirements depend on where you operate. In England, start with the Environment Agency registration guidance. Check the corresponding regulator in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. Leaving approved bags with the customer is different from advertising a removal service.

Find a suitable first customer

Describe a specific outcome in local advertising: “Patient help organising one wardrobe, with you making every keep-or-donate decision.” Explain your service area and how to request a quote. Follow local group rules and avoid claims about qualifications or experience you do not have. Practise your workflow in your own home first. If someone agrees to a practice session, explain that it is practice and ask for honest feedback. Record the actual time taken, not just the attractive finished result.

Your first practical action

Write a one-page offer for one small area. Include what is included, what is excluded, how customers prepare and how you calculate the price. Then test the workflow before advertising widely. Join GrabFinds for free to discuss your first offer and share progress without exposing customer details. The aim is a useful, repeatable service, not a promise of effortless income.
