How to Start an Ironing Service in the UK – Beginner Guide

Practise on your own garments, define a safe first offer, quote a small paid batch and measure the return after every working minute and cost.

How to Start an Ironing Service in the UK – Beginner Guide

Your first goal is one small ironing job completed safely, on time and at a price you understand. Do not start by promising a full basket overnight. This guide helps you practise, set boundaries and test a paid service; it is not a replacement for garment care instructions or the iron manufacturer's manual.

1. Define a service you can deliver

Begin with ironing only. Washing, stain removal, dry cleaning, repairs and specialist pressing are separate services. Choose familiar everyday garments with readable care labels. Set a maximum trial quantity, an agreed handover arrangement and a turnaround you can meet. Decline items whose condition, fabric, instructions or value put them beyond your competence.

Decide whether to work at a suitable home workspace or at the customer's premises using agreed equipment. Do not offer collection automatically: the journey may cost more than the batch earns. Start with a very small area or customer drop-off by arrangement, subject to your premises checks.

2. Practise and time the whole process

  1. Choose a small mixed batch of your own garments that can safely be ironed.
  2. Check labels, count items and sort by the care requirements.
  3. Set up your board and iron according to their instructions.
  4. Time preparation, ironing, cooling, hanging or folding, and packing separately.
  5. Check for creases, shine, unwanted marks and damp packaging before judging the result.
  6. Repeat on another day. Use consistent timings, not your fastest attempt, for planning.
